rags to riches or progression style games

Main Post:

What are some good rags to riches or progression games? I have tried stardew valley, big ambitions, super life rpg, and one of my favorites is stick rpg 2. Please don't suggest games like gta and minecraft. I like games where you start poor, and work your way up to millionaire status. Specifically money based. Bonus points if you can also spend your money on nice cars and houses.

I built a RAG powered video game discovery tool

Main Post:

Hey everyone!

Like most of you here, I've been diving into building things with RAG. So what I ended up making is a video game discovery tool that uses RAG instead of traditional web search. You can search for games using natural language and it can fetch live data like reviews.

Also want to talk about how amazing Pydantic AI is. The first version of this I used LangGraph/Chain and oh many they are so overly-complicated. The nice thing about Pydantic AI is it feels just like standard python programming with the powers of an LLM. Type safety is seriously underrated. Logfire is also an amazing tool for tracking the responses of the LLM and the functional calls.

You can try it here: www.leyware.com

Fun 'Rags to Riches' genre games?

Main Post:

I love the 'build your empire' style of gaming, but I'm very particular. I love games where you can visually see the result of your efforts, or the gameplay changes as you become better.

Games like Vice City/San Andreas, Fable(haven't played but didn't seem as visual as I'd hope), Oblivion, etc. RTS's count, but I'm looking more for visual and content than strategy based changes.

Never have been able to find a game thats quite like what I'm looking for. Any suggestions?

Looking for simulation games and/or rags-to-riches with a sandbox-ish open world or campaign map

Main Post:

I'm looking for games similar to (I really enjoyed all the games below):

  • Mount & Blade Warband or Bannerlord
    • Commanding my own army, joining factions, creating my own kingdom, bringing cities and villages to prosperity etc.
    • Fantastic battles to bring the management alive and bring meaning to continuously improving myself, my champions and my army
    • Wish economy was a bigger point, e.g. make weapons to be able to field armies, have to build & defend mines, organise transports and be able to starve a city of arrows by preventing them to get the resources to build it etc. (maybe I should make a mod that does this come to think of it)
  • Kenshi
    • I really enjoy building my own base to try to make it in that savage sandbox wasteland, I love being at the mercy of existing systems
    • Leveling up my dudes, getting good equipment and assigning roles to my people
    • Unfortunately my actions don't affect the overall world
  • Mechwarrior 5 (at least partially with the rags-to-riches and customization)
    • Really like grinding up money to buy better mechs and weapons to be faced with bigger challenges.
    • Biggest frustration here is the lack of a dynamic campaign map - the factions don't capture territory from each other and me helping factions out has really no effect on the world besides faction relations to me changing
  • X4: Foundations
    • This is probably the most "pure" representation of what I like
    • Fully simulated world, fully simulated economy, autonomous factions that do their own thing, build stations, ships, enter war with other factions
    • I love the Xenon expanding and attacking everyone - really gives me the desire to support factions or enjoy them being destroyed so that I can sell my goods to them for more
    • Love being able to have my own fleet and stations as well as sectors. Love the idea of being my own faction in a game that's all about simulation.
    • Wish the piloting/combat was better, doesn't bring the fantasy as alive as I wish (e.g. as Mount & Blade does)
  • Avorion
    • Cool game with the simulated world and all
    • Just really dislike that you leave parts of the world behind and you do not really care about faction relations at all - it's just a world for you to do quests in and make money in.
    • Simulated world does not feel relevant or alive
  • Crusader Kings 3, Hearts of Iron IV etc.
    • The simulation aspect of these is what I love
    • in CK3 it's nice to try to survive in the simulation and try to affect the outcome of the world
    • Unfortunately, at least CK3 is way too easy imo. It's basically impossible to loose so I find I loose the drive/motivation to play
    • HoI IV is cool because of the alternate history you can live out and the simulation you do it in. No rags to riches feeling though in this one
  • Foxhole
    • Love the big world and the amount of dynamic experiences it provides
    • Can't really do much as one player, but I feel like joining a group and participating in operations gives me a similar feeling to affecting the way the world turns out
    • Love the "economy" and logistics aspect of it - makes the world feel more meaningful and like actions have consequences

Essentially, what I enjoy is being in a simulated sandbox world where I get to start with nothing and work my way up while slowly starting to affect the way the world turns out. What matters is in the simulation/sandbox my actions have meaningful consequences that can be felt for a very long time. The more chaos theory applies, the better.

Games that you may recommend, but they are not the right fit for this question:

  • Rimworld
    • The game is way too slow and I find the AI management bothersome
    • Can't affect the overall world
    • It's not really a simulation beyond the map I play on
  • Stellaris
    • It's a great game, I like it
    • It's just not the feeling/experience I described above
  • Elite: Dangerous
    • In theory exactly what I want
    • Unfortunately, you have basically no impact on the simulation as one player alone
    • moment-to-moment gameplay is not amazing imo, travel takes way too long etc. Very grindy with tons of downtime
    • Always find myself thinking I'm only playing more because I hope it will be fun or worth it at some point

Top Comment: Starsector with the Nexerelin mod and some added on factions. 2d game, you play a spaceship/fleet of ships. You can trade and affect the economy, factions will try to expand and make war with each other, you can establish your own colonies and faction, you can explore secrets and get great rewards for doing so. The game is not sold on steam but on it's own webpage so you might not have heard of it.

What are some top-rated and/or award-winning "rags-to-riches" games that will keep me hooked for a long time?

Main Post:

I would like to start from incredibly humble beginnings, like being homeless or living in a tent or shack, then moving my way up to wealth. I like this kind of epic dopamine fix.

What popular games fit this description? Thanks in advance.

Top Comment:

Real life. Tell the landlord his rent prices are absurd and buy a tent. Stock up on dry crackers. Accept the lowest paid job possible. The gameplay opportunities from there are endless!

Alternatively Albion Online if you like PVP as PVP in real life from your tent is not recommended, nor is permanently living in a tent.

EVE Echoes or Hades Star if you like scifi.

Stardew Valley, Crashlands, Exiled Kingdoms, Don't Starve.

Hopefully something fits your criteria. I tried to get a mixture of genres.
